After all the celebratory events and deadlines you met, this is the beginning of another marathon of creative sessions. Before you jump in, there is a quick round up that you should check out below, to prepare yourself for the new year.

The 2018 graphic design trends mentioned in the post are not the only things to look out for in the upcoming year, but they are important starting points to consider. The general consensus is that, as a graphic designer, web developer or content creator you should pay special attention to the following in 2018:

Bold, vivid colors

If only startups used fluorescent colors and flashy tones to stand out from the rest, now big players are also jumping on the bandwagon with more daring displays. This seems to be a counter response to all the minimalist aesthetics taking over lately. Take the Instagram logo, for example. It was a wave of both negative and positive reactions to the very colorful icon, which late died down and many are following suit. The screens and gadgets now allow for easier page loading so brands are all over this tendency to add more and more color to their branding and play with imagery. This started in 2017 and will definitely reach a peak during 2018.

Taking that into account, it was no surprise to see Pantone choose Ultra Violet as the year’s color. Purple tones will inevitably pave the way for many galaxy inspired patterns and motifs, such as stars, planets or anything related to adventure and discovery.

Innovative fonts and typography

Speaking of bold colors, the same seems to happen with fonts and typography. We’ve seen the massive amount of hand-made fonts become mainstream. Now it’s time to put those creative hands through a more challenging process, to create colorful, interactive fonts and typography that jump off the screen. I remember back in October of last year, Adobe and Fontself offering such colored fonts for free, for a week only. That’s when I was certain this will be one of the trends of 2018 in terms of text layout and structure.

Doubles: double exposure, duo tones, duo light

The next design trend I’m sure you’ve already notice in the last couple of years is the heavy use of double exposure. I see it on posters, brand sites, billboards and book covers. Next to this growing tendency, there are plenty of duo tones used, most people crediting Spotify as the initiator. The effect compliments semi-flat design really well and goes hand–in-hand with the trend of bold, vivid colors I mentioned earlier. It is the year of doubles it seems, because double-light can also be included as another 2018’s favorite.

Personalized illustrations

Moving on the a very popular design subject, illustrations. Hand-drawn, personalized illustrations are still top of the list. So, say goodbye to stock images. But what makes them so much more interesting is when they go over photos or altered for a negative-space effect. Whatever you choose as your favorite, mixed media seems to be on the rise. As style, the 80’s and 90s are making a coming not only in fashion but in the graphic design industry as well. So expect to see more of that in the form of patterns, characters and geometric shapes. Think modern shapes and retro gradients.

Isometric Graphics

In accordance with the tendency to steer clear of symmetry, isometric icons are bound to populate our interwebs more and more. Tired of all the flat design, the industry is distancing itself from it by introducing this new trend. Isometric design is a way of rendering 3d objects in 2d. Expect to become animated as well.

SVG formats

Last but definitely not least, the most popular graphic format announced is the SVG (scalable vector graphic). As the name suggests, these vectors are scalable, flexible, adaptable which is paramount to the array of devices used today. No more fixed file types – this is the era of responsive information, so act (or design) like it!
